“Marry me.”
Saturday, March 24, 2012
“What?”
“Marry me.”
“Where's the ring?”
“Who needs a ring?”
“Isn't that what marriage is all about?”
“No.”
“What's it about then?”
“It's about spending the rest of your time with someone. The rest of
your life. All you really have to keep, and you're choosing to share it
with someone, just one person.”
“Share your time with me then.”
“Why you?”
“Why not me?”
“It's about mortgages. It's about employment. It's about writing a
will. It's about legalities. Disneyland, anniversaries, families, health
insurance, next of kin. It's about mistakes and forgiveness. It's about
tolerance and patience and satisfaction. It's about taking the very
best you can get.”
“I'd like to be the best.”
“I'm not sure you are. How could I ever be sure?”
“Marry me and find out.”
“I don't want to divorce.”
“Neither do I.”
“I want to be sure.”
“I'm sure. I'm sure of you.”
“I'm not sure I'll ever be sure.”
“Then why not take a chance on an opportunity of a lifetime?”
“It's not objective.”
“It's subjective.”
“I want a ring.”
“Who needs a ring?”
“That's an objective symbol of the institution of marriage.”
“Not a subjective one.”
“No, it's not subjective.”
“You're subjective. I'm subjective. Subjectively, I want you. Me. You. Myself to yourself.”
“Why do we need to get married?”
“We don't.”
“Then why ask?”
“To make you think.”
“About what?”
“About what constitutes a relationship worthy of time in the eyes of the one I love.”
“And what does constitute a relationship worthy of time?”
“You. You and me. Two subjective people, aware of the objective. Two
subjective people who don't need the objective in order to be.”
“Subjectively, you're enough for me for the foreseeable future.”
“Subjectively, that's all I can ask for.”
